When Trendy Coffee Misses the Mark: My Take on Whipped Coffee

This recipe brought me back to the days when I was just beginning to explore coffee when every cup felt like an experiment and I hadn’t yet found what truly satisfied my palate. I remember chasing trends, trying whatever was popular, hoping this would be the drink that finally clicked.

So, I decided to give the viral whipped coffee.

And… unpopular opinion: I did not enjoy it.

Don’t get me wrong it’s visually stunning. Thick, glossy foam piled high over milk looks like a café masterpiece. But for me, the flavor didn’t live up to the hype. The bitterness was sharp, the texture felt disconnected from the drink itself, and it reminded me why discovering your own coffee preferences matters more than following trends.

That said, this recipe is still worth sharing, if only as a rite of passage for any coffee lover. And who knows? You might love it.

Whipped Coffee (Dalgona-Style)

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 2 tablespoons hot water

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)

  • Ice (optional)

How to Make It

  1. Whip the Coffee
In a medium bowl, combine the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. Using a whisk, hand mixer, or milk frother, whip the mixture until it becomes thick, fluffy, and light in color. This can take anywhere from 3–8 minutes depending on your method.

  2. Prepare the Milk
Fill a glass with ice if you’re making an iced version, froth then pour in the milk. For a hot version, gently warm the milk before pouring.

  3. Assemble the Drink
Spoon the whipped coffee mixture generously over the milk.

  4. Stir and Taste
Mix before drinking this step is essential. The whipped coffee on its own is intense, and stirring helps balance the flavors.

Final Thoughts

While whipped coffee wasn’t for me, I appreciate what it represents: a moment of curiosity, experimentation, and shared excitement around coffee. Sometimes discovering what you don’t like is just as important as finding what you love.

And if nothing else, it makes for a beautiful photo and a memorable step in your coffee journey. ☕
